Rx Vetoryl (trilostane) Capsules for Dogs

Vetoryl (trilostane) Capsules are used for the treatment of hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's syndrome or disease) in dogs. This includes both pituitary-dependent and adrenal-dependent forms of the disease. Vetoryl is an adrenocortical suppressant and is FDA-approved for oral use in dogs only.

Directions:

Always provide the Client Information Sheet with the prescription.

The starting dose is 1.0-3.0 mg/lb (2.2-6.7 mg/kg) once daily, administered with food. Capsule combinations may be required depending on the dog’s weight.

Starting Dose Guidelines:

  • 10–22 lb (4.5–10 kg): 30 mg once daily
  • 22–44 lb (10–20 kg): 60 mg once daily
  • 44–88 lb (20–40 kg): 120 mg (2 x 60 mg) once daily
  • 88–132 lb (40–60 kg): 180 mg (3 x 60 mg) once daily
  • Over 132 lb (60+ kg): Use appropriate capsule combinations

After 10–14 days of treatment, re-examine the dog and perform a 4–6 hour post-dosing ACTH stimulation test to determine further action.

Post-ACTH Cortisol Levels:

  • <1.45 µg/dL: Stop treatment and restart at a lower dose
  • 1.45–5.4 µg/dL: Continue current dose
  • 5.4–9.1 µg/dL: Continue if signs are controlled, or increase dose if needed
  • >9.1 µg/dL: Increase dose

Monitor closely after any dose change. If signs are not controlled throughout the day, split the daily dose into two and administer 12 hours apart. Long-term monitoring should occur at 30 days, 90 days, and every 3 months thereafter, including ACTH tests, physical exams, and bloodwork.

Ingredients:

Trilostane

Cautions:

Do not use in dogs that are pregnant or have kidney or liver disease. Inform your veterinarian of all medications your dog is taking, including over-the-counter products.

In the case of overdose, symptomatic treatment for hypoadrenocorticism (e.g., corticosteroids, fluids) may be required.

Drug Interactions: Use ACE inhibitors with caution due to additive effects on aldosterone levels. Do not use potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone) with Vetoryl, as both may increase the risk of hyperkalemia.
